RE: IMMEDIATE & PERMANENT CEASEFIRE

Dear Mr. President and Connecticut U.S. Senators,

We, the undersigned elected officials of Connecticut, value human life, dignity, equality, safety, and peace for all, regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity. We stand in solidarity with our Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities, reaffirming our commitment to their safety, security, and well-being both here in Connecticut and to their families and friends in Israel and Palestine. It is in this spirit that we join with voices of conscience in Connecticut and around the world in recognizing the imperative need for an immediate, mutual, and permanent ceasefire in the assault on Gaza.

The armed violence in Israel and Palestine has claimed the lives of innocent civilians, with tens of thousands of lives lost, hundreds of thousands of people displaced, and homes, neighborhoods, schools, universities, hospitals, churches, and mosques destroyed.  Furthermore, absent an immediate ceasefire and prompt delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza hundreds of thousands of lives are at imminent risk of apocalyptic death by starvation, dehydration, and disease.  Additionally, there must be an end to violations of international law.  All religious sites, including the Al Aqsa complex, must be protected from encroachment and destruction.

We further urge you to prioritize the safety and well-being of all hostages and detainees in both Gaza and Israel, recognizing their right to freedom and unconditional release. We call on you to exercise all available diplomatic leverage towards such end.

The current military solution approach has proved counterproductive resulting in unnecessary deaths and prolonged suffering.  There is much to do to secure a peace that ensures safety, freedom, justice, and equality for all people in the region. But the immediate priority must be to stop the mounting death and destruction.

Sincerely,

Points of Unity & Demands:

·  We ensure that all our activities will be 501c3 compliant. We will avoid any and all electioneering, i.e. advocacy of voting for or against any candidate for elected government office, in order to protect members’ non-profit status.  However, such compliance does not preclude interaction with elected officials on policy (not politics), but in fact we encourage it as our main goal and purpose.

·  We embrace a diversity of religions and creeds. As a union of Jews, Muslims, Christians, and other religious and non-religious groups, we embrace and benefit from each other’s’ religious identity, experiences, and wisdom.

·  We embrace a diversity of tactics & positions. We come to this movement from a variety of viewpoints, religious backgrounds, and with expertise for different tactics and political actions, and we recognize that we all have a role to play.

·  From our position in the US, our demands focus on the settler-colonial occupation & apartheid regime and the US’ complicity in upholding them: ·

o Immediate and permanent cease-fire in and around Gaza

o End the siege on Gaza

o Immediate withdrawal of all US assets and military personnel supporting the Israeli attack on Gaza

o Immediate cessation of all encroachments on religious sites, especially the AL-AQSA Mosque complex.

o End of all US aid to Israel

o Divestment, especially by the state  of Connecticut, from corporations that support the settler-colonial occupation & apartheid regime, from all Israeli investments, especially treasury bonds

o Divest our unions from all Israeli investments, especially treasury bonds

o Invest instead in human needs such as universal healthcare, housing, and education.

o End police training partnerships with Israel and Gulf tyrannies (KSA, UAE), e.g. NYPD-CIA, FBI

o We affirm the internationally established right of Palestinian refugees to return
